What we have here, is one of the typical teenie actioners, which tells for the umpteenth time the story of a newcomer who has to become accepted in his new neighborhood. Certainly he is a rebel, hard to control and considers himself as a tough guy. And also clichéd, that in his new school there is already a top dog in command with a hot chick on his side – who crushes on the newbie right on the first day. Also not new is the fighting (FIGHT CLUB for kids, the satirist will think at once) where our hero gets his ass kicked first. But he finds a Sifu, a disenchanted ex-champion, who prepares him for the final fight. There are also a looser bud, the little well behaved brother, the helpless Mom and having enough mental problems of his own. But there are some details which set the movie apart from the usual: the actors are convincing, in the first place Djimon Hounsou, who gives – within the bounds of the screenplay – profoundness. Also Sean Faris in the leading role and Cam Gigandet as opponent are doing very well. And at least Amber Hearst as the cute looking love-interest has nothing to do but this. The choreography of fights is good and sometimes quite bloody. And that is where the problem begins: for the target audience (from 12 to 16 years old) there is too much violence – I’m curious about how the german theatrical version looks like. The rating is aimed for the age of 16. But I’m sure that this won’t happen without any cuts. Meanwhile the german theatralicversion is uncut, but not suitable for persons under 18 years. In the US the movie was rated PG-13 and is available on DVD in the meantime. At the same time a so called 'Extended-Beatdown-Edition' was released.
